Volvo S60 Fluid and Filter Service with Timing Belt and Water Pump Replacement

This S60 showed 96,572 km at the time of its engine oil service. We serviced the engine oil, filters and brake fluid. We replaced the timing belt, rollers and water pump. The accessory drive belt, tensioner and crankshaft front oil seal were replaced too.

Changing the engine oil on schedule does not mean the belts and cooling system are taken care of. Each component has its own checks and its own replacement interval.

This 2016 Volvo S60 had its engine oil, brake fluid and filters serviced at 96,572 km. In a later job, the timing belt, water pump and the surrounding belts and oil seal were replaced.

Engine oil and filters replaced

The engine oil was changed to PETRONAS Syntium 7000 0W-20, along with the oil filter. The air and cabin filters were compared with their new replacements and changed. They filter the air entering the engine and the cabin respectively.

We also replaced the fuel filter. We added a moisture remover (BG Fuel Drier 280) and a diesel fuel additive (BG 245) to the fuel system. The fuel filter catches debris and water in the fuel before they reach the injection system.

Brake fluid replaced all the way to the wheel bleed ports

We replaced the brake fluid using BG PF7 equipment. This included a pulse flush, which pushes the old fluid out while repeatedly cutting the pressure. We connected hoses to the bleed ports at each wheel so the job covered the full line from the reservoir to the calipers.

Brake fluid slowly absorbs moisture from the air. It degrades over time even in a car that is driven very little. That is why we track brake fluid by the date of the last change as well as by mileage.

A fluid change maintains the hydraulic system. Pad and disc wear are separate items that have to be measured and judged on their own. If the pedal feels different or the brakes make noise, have the pads and discs inspected, however recently the fluid was changed.

Timing belt, water pump, surrounding belts and oil seal replaced

In a separate, later job, we removed the cover on the side of the engine and replaced the timing belt and rollers. The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft rotating in time with each other. The rollers support the belt and hold it on its set path at the correct tension, so we replaced them as well. We also replaced the accessory drive belt and its tensioner.

With the timing belt area open, we replaced the water pump with a new unit complete with gasket. We also replaced the crankshaft front oil seal. This seal stops oil from leaking at the front end of the crankshaft. It sits behind the pulley that drives the belts. Outside a belt job, reaching it means taking that area apart again.

After the water pump work, we replaced the coolant with Volvo-specific coolant. The next service interval is set separately for each item, based on its service history and the vehicle's specifications. That applies to the engine oil, brake fluid, timing belt and water pump.

The fluid and filter service came first. The belts and water pump were replaced later, at a separately scheduled appointment.

If I have kept up with engine oil changes, do I still need to think about the timing belt?

Engine oil and the timing belt are maintained on different criteria. For the belt, you need to check separately when it was last replaced and what the service schedule for your vehicle specifies.

Is the water pump always replaced together with the timing belt?

We decide the scope based on the vehicle's design, the condition of the parts and the previous service history. On this S60, we replaced the timing belt, rollers and water pump. We also replaced the drive belt, tensioner and crankshaft front oil seal, and changed the coolant to Volvo-specific coolant.

Does brake fluid need changing even if I do not drive much?
