BMW 120d: unsure where to start with maintenance?

We inspected this BMW 120d from the battery and underside to its brakes and tyres. The battery needed charging, and there were marks inside the undertray to investigate. Brake fluid, differential oil and transmission fluid were also serviced.

The battery result called for charging, not replacement

The Midtronics screen showed a rating of 800CCA, a measured 742CCA, 12.35V and 29°C. Its result was Good Recharge.

Good Recharge indicates a battery in good condition that needs charging. Rather than replacing it immediately, check its charge level and operating conditions and retest after charging when needed.

Some areas can only be seen with the undertray removed

We inspected the upper engine, belt area and underside separately. The undertray was removed to check internal marks and connections.

A wet surface needs investigation to distinguish ongoing leakage from residue left by earlier work. The view outside the cover is not enough to select replacement parts.

Checking brakes and tyres directly

We checked disc surfaces and the pad area, measured tyre tread depth and pressures, and inspected brake-fluid condition separately.

Tread that looks sufficient does not mean that all four tyres are in similar condition. Individual tread-depth and pressure checks help identify maintenance needs.

Brake fluid, differential oil and transmission fluid replacement

Brake fluid was serviced with exchange equipment connected to bleed lines at the wheels. Differential oil was also serviced while checking the drained fluid.

We used ZF LifeguardFluid 8 and fluid-exchange equipment for the transmission. The photographs show the change in oil colour through the observation windows as the exchange progressed.

Please bring your previous service records

This inspection covered the battery, brakes, tyres, engine, underside and fluids. Recording inspection findings separately from completed work makes changes easier to compare at the next visit.

If you are establishing the car's maintenance history, please bring previous service invoices. They help distinguish completed work from what is still needed.

Does Good Recharge mean I should replace the battery?

The tester reports battery condition together with a need to recharge. This differs from a replacement result. Charge level, starting behaviour and a retest after charging, when needed, should be considered together.
