A long-stored Cayenne GTS: cracked tyres and a pull to the right

This 2008 Cayenne 4.8 GTS belongs to a customer who has several vehicles maintained at NHC. After a long period parked, the tyres had developed cracks and the car pulled right when driven. No oil leaks were found. We checked the tyres and alignment, changed the engine oil and discussed regular checks even when a vehicle sees little use.

Low use does not mean its condition stays unchanged

The owner regularly brings several vehicles to NHC. This Cayenne had been parked for a long time. It arrived with 135,358km on the odometer and cracked tyres. We also checked for oil leaks and found none.

A pull rarely has a single fixed cause. Tire wear and conicity (a tire's tendency to roll toward one side like a cone), alignment values, and suspension condition can all contribute, so we started with the tire positions and the alignment, in that order.

The removed tyre also had severe wear and splitting along its inner shoulder, an area that is easy to miss when inspecting only from outside the vehicle.

Three adjustments: the first and final measurements

The first measurement on 17 September showed front-right toe at -2.6 mm, outside the displayed 0.5–1.6 mm range: that wheel was pointing outward. Tyre positions were also changed to assess the influence of conicity.

There were three alignment adjustments across the visits on 17 and 19 September. Camber and caster were adjusted together to reduce the pull to the right. Final front toe was 1.2 mm left and 1.0 mm right. The comparison below uses the first reading on the 17th and the last on the 19th.

Final right caster remained at 8.98°, above the displayed 8.75° upper limit. Further work will consider the driving feedback, air suspension and tyre condition together.

Use the oil-service visit to check for fluid leaks too

The engine oil and oil filter were also replaced. After draining the old oil and installing the new filter, PETRONAS Syntium 5000 was added.

With several vehicles, each may cover few miles while going a long time between inspections. For vehicles parked for extended periods like this one, NHC recommends a condition check alongside an oil-service visit twice a year, or at least once a year.

That visit is more than an oil change: it is an opportunity to inspect for oil and coolant leak traces underneath, and check hoses and tyres. The purpose is to catch small problems before they develop into more extensive damage or repair work.

Results and what remains to be checked

After the three adjustments, the effort needed to keep countering the rightward pull was substantially reduced. A gentle rightward drift and intermittent changes after bumps remained.

Air-suspension recovery and tyre characteristics are the next areas to assess. We explained the current condition to the owner and will use driving feedback to decide on further adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

The alignment was adjusted three times — why isn't the pull completely gone?

The effort needed to hold the wheel is much lower now, but a gentle rightward drift remains with hands off. Factors outside the alignment numbers, such as the air suspension's ride height and damping and the tire characteristics, can be involved, so the next step will be decided from driving feedback on the current settings and further component checks.

The caster is outside the specified range — shouldn't it be adjusted further?

In the final measurement the right caster reads 8.98°, above the equipment's upper limit of 8.75°. We don't recommend pushing an out-of-range value further as a matter of course; it is safer to decide after checking how the car actually drives and inspecting the related components.

Does a low-mileage car still need regular visits?

Yes. A parked vehicle still needs checks for leaks and tyre condition. For this type of use, NHC recommends a condition check alongside an oil-service visit twice a year, or at least annually. This does not mean replacing every other fluid at each visit; those decisions depend on condition and service history.

Bringing a stored car back into use? Start with a condition check.

Tell us when the oil was last changed, how long the car has been parked and the tyre condition. We can arrange leak checks and fluid maintenance, plus tyre and alignment checks if it pulls. For multiple vehicles, we can discuss visits around each car’s service history.

We explain the scope and cost before proceeding with your agreement.
