BMW X3 at 165,522km: what should an oil service include?

What else deserves attention when an X3 has covered more than 160,000km? This 2020 X3 20d received Shell engine oil and a new filter at 165,522km. We also looked around the belt, pulleys and underside.

165,522km: start with the dipstick

This X3 came in for an engine oil change. The odometer read 165,522km, and we checked the dipstick before draining the oil.

Alongside oil appearance, we consider how far and how the car has been driven since its last service. Repeated short commutes and frequent long trips place different demands on maintenance.

Fresh oil and a new filter

We drained the old oil, fitted a Hengst oil filter and filled with Shell engine oil.

Removing the filter and draining the oil from underneath exposes areas that are normally out of sight. That is why we look around them during an oil service.

An increase matters as well as a decrease

NHC checks the collected oil so the next service has a reference point. The previous fill, distance travelled and top-ups help us spot changes from the vehicle’s usual pattern.

Diesel oil levels can also rise. In some engines, additional injection used during DPF regeneration can allow fuel into the engine oil. An unexpected increase is a reason to review regeneration history, driving conditions and the fuel system.

Fuel dilution was not established in this X3 case. Interpreting any change requires comparable drainage conditions and top-up records, followed by further diagnosis where needed.

Areas to check at the next oil service

We checked around the belt, pulleys and underside. These areas cannot be seen from the driver's seat, so periodic inspection on a lift is useful.
