Top of the Engine — Valve Cover Gaskets, Ignition Check, Intake Cleaning

We removed the valve covers, replaced the gaskets and prepared the covers and mating surfaces.

The spark plugs and ignition coils were removed for inspection, and deposits in the intake passages were cleaned.

Cooling System — Water Pump, Thermostat, and Evans Coolant Conversion

The water pump and thermostat were replaced, with attention to connections and coolant service as part of the cooling-system work.

The coolant was converted to Evans. PrepFluid and removal of residual conventional coolant and water formed part of the conversion; the recorded work includes clearing the lines.

The coolant type should be checked before later top-ups or repairs. Keeping the conversion in the service history helps avoid unintended mixing.

Oils and Consumables — Engine Oil, Power Steering, Differential, Filters

We changed the engine oil and filter, using BG EPR and MOA as part of the service. EPR is a product for cleaning the inside of the engine, and MOA is an additive that reinforces the protective performance of the fresh oil. With over 110,000 km on a high-revving engine, we went one step beyond a simple oil change.

The power steering fluid was replaced with Fuchs CHF11S. Hydraulic steering fluid is an interval that is easy to overlook, and neglecting it puts strain on the pump and rack. We also serviced the differential oil — on a car like the M3, where the differential works hard, it belongs on the regular maintenance list.

The air filter and cabin filter were also replaced. Their service age and condition can be checked again at the next inspection.

DCT — Pan Filter Replacement and the TITAN FFL4 Level Procedure

We replaced the DCT pan/filter and filled it with Fuchs TITAN FFL4.

The oil level was then adjusted at the specified fluid-temperature condition. The final level matters alongside the quantity added.

Brakes and Wheels — On-Car Disc Resurfacing, Hofmann Balancing

We machined the brake discs on the car, working with each disc mounted to its hub.

The wheels were balanced on the Hofmann balancer alongside the suspension work.

Suspension — OHLINS Kit with Bushings and Links

The existing suspension was removed and an OHLINS height-adjustable suspension kit fitted. The photographs show the DFV dampers and assembled springs.

Bushing and link work was carried out alongside it. Surrounding connections matter as well as the new dampers when restoring the way the chassis responds.

Ride height and wheel alignment were checked after the suspension work, followed by alignment adjustment.

Alignment — Before and After

Measured before adjustment, toe was 1.3 mm / -0.6 mm at the front and 0.7 mm / 9.2 mm at the rear. A rear wheel at 9.2 mm is a very large deviation — driving in that state affects tire wear and straight-line stability. The thrust angle was -0.34 degrees, meaning the rear axle was pointed away from the car's direction of travel.

After adjustment, the final figures were toe front 0.1 mm / -0.1 mm, rear 0.1 mm / 0.2 mm, with a thrust angle of -0.01 degrees. In practical terms, the rear axle is now aligned almost exactly with the direction the car travels.

Camber was adjusted from -1.60 / -1.58 degrees to -1.69 / -1.45 degrees at the front, and from -1.95 / -1.40 degrees to -1.97 / -1.78 degrees at the rear. At the rear in particular, the left-right difference narrowed from 0.55 degrees to 0.19 degrees, so both rear wheels now meet the road under much more even conditions. Setting the alignment on the newly built chassis completed this service.

Questions about this work

Why redo items that had already been serviced elsewhere?

The owner was not satisfied with the results of previous maintenance, so we agreed to inspect previously serviced items ourselves and redo whatever was necessary. For a car being kept long term, knowing its true current condition and establishing a baseline is the starting point for all future care.

Why is PrepFluid needed when converting to Evans waterless coolant?

Waterless coolant loses its intended properties if old coolant or water remains in the lines. That is why we ran Evans PrepFluid through the system to remove residual water before the conversion. After converting, the system must never be topped up with water or conventional antifreeze.

How is on-car disc resurfacing different from replacement?

On-car resurfacing machines the disc surface while it is mounted on the vehicle, so runout can be corrected relative to the hub as assembled. It is an option instead of replacement when the disc thickness is still within usable range, and on this car the discs were resurfaced.
