2016 BMW 730d Front Air Strut Replacement – Diagnostic Fill Procedure

This 2016 BMW 730d came in for a front left air strut replacement. We checked the pressure state of the removed part, compared it with the new strut before installation, and — because this is an air suspension car — did not stop at installation: we connected the diagnostic tool and completed the air fill procedure.

2016 BMW 730d — in for front left air strut replacement

Pressure state of the removed strut checked, old and new parts compared

New air strut installed, followed by an air fill with the diagnostic tool

The diagnostic tool showed 8.88bar during the fill — a reading during this procedure, not a universal target value

What the Front Strut Does in the 7 Series Air Suspension

This generation of the 7 Series rides on air suspension, which controls ride height and comfort. The front air strut combines the shock absorber and the air spring in one unit — a key component that supports this large body on air pressure.

Because an air strut contains a rubber section that holds the air, age can bring air loss and difficulty holding ride height. On this car, the decision was made to replace the front left strut with a new part, and we proceeded with the job.

Installing the New Air Strut

With the checks complete, we installed the new strut on the front left of the car.

After installing the air strut, we connected the diagnostic tool and followed the vehicle-specific filling procedure.

The Diagnostic Air Fill and the 8.88bar Reading

After installation, the diagnostic tool was used for the air-fill procedure. The display showed 8.88 bar at that stage.

This is a reading from the procedure, not a universal pressure target. Installation needs to be followed by the appropriate vehicle-specific diagnostic steps and operating checks.

Questions about this work

Can just one air strut be replaced?

It depends on the condition of the parts. We service the side that inspection shows needs it — on this car, the front left strut was replaced.

Why is a diagnostic fill needed after replacing an air strut?

An air suspension car only sits at its proper height and operates normally once the system is filled with air. That is why the job is not complete until the diagnostic tool is connected and the fill procedure is carried out after installation.

Does Your Car Sit Unevenly, or Is There an Air Suspension Warning?

Air suspension problems can come from several places — struts, compressor, or air lines — so we identify the cause through inspection and repair only what is needed. When you book a consultation, having details ready such as ride height changes after parking, the exact warning message, and previous repair history helps us set the diagnostic direction quickly.

We explain the scope of any repairs and the estimate before proceeding with your approval.
