2016 BMW 730d Brake Judder – Why We Machined the Discs Instead of Replacing Them
This BMW 730d came in with vibration under braking. We inspected the disc surfaces and pad contact faces, then machined the discs on the car and exchanged the brake fluid.

Brake Judder: Where We Look First
When the steering wheel or pedal shakes under braking, we inspect the disc and pad contact surfaces. Uneven surfaces or uneven pad contact can contribute to judder.
On this 730d, we inspected the disc contact surfaces and rusted areas, then removed the pads to check their mating surfaces.

We also replaced the brake fluid using equipment connected to the reservoir.
Brake fluid absorbs moisture in service. Its replacement history is worth checking when servicing the discs and pads.

Condition After the Work and What to Watch
The disc friction surfaces were machined and the brake fluid exchanged. If judder is felt again, inspection should include the discs and pads as well as the hubs and suspension.
Questions about this work
If I have brake judder, do the discs always need to be replaced?
No. If enough thickness remains and there are no cracks or damage, the surface can be restored by machining and the discs reused. On this 730d, after checking the condition we machined the discs on the car instead of replacing them.
How is on-car machining different from removing the discs and cutting them on a bench?
The discs are machined exactly as installed on the hubs, so any small runout introduced during assembly is corrected under the same conditions the disc actually rotates in.
