Volkswagen Tiguan Timing Belt Kit and Water Pump Replacement
We opened up the side of the engine to replace the timing belt and surrounding components, then refilled the coolant after the water pump work.
When a timing belt is replaced, is changing the belt alone enough? On this Tiguan, we opened up the side of the engine to check the timing belt routing, compared the removed parts against the new ones, and extended the work to the water pump and the components around the belt.
Checking the nearby components and their service history along with the belt helps avoid taking the same area apart again for another repair.

We opened the side of the engine to expose the timing belt path
The timing belt sits behind the cover on the side of the engine. We removed the surrounding components to expose the path the belt and pulleys run along, then removed the existing parts.
The timing belt keeps the movement of the engine's rotating parts in sync. It does a different job from the accessory drive belt, which turns the accessories on the outside of the engine, so it is best to keep separate replacement records for each.

Replacing the timing-belt components, water pump and accessory belt
The timing-belt tensioner and water pump were removed, compared with the new parts and replaced. The accessory drive belt and its tensioner were also replaced.
A tensioner maintains belt tension. Checking the belt and nearby components together helps avoid opening the same area again soon after fitting a new belt.

We assembled the belt and filled the coolant
After assembling the area around the belt, we connected coolant service equipment and filled the system with coolant. Replacing the water pump means opening parts of the system that coolant flows through, so coolant work follows reassembly.
If the coolant level keeps dropping afterwards, or you see signs of leakage at a connection, have the car inspected. Keeping a record of the replaced parts together with the date of the coolant work will help at the next service.

Are the timing belt and the accessory drive belt the same belt?
No. The timing belt keeps the engine's rotating parts in time, while the accessory drive belt turns the accessories on the outside of the engine.
When the timing belt is replaced, is the water pump checked too?
We decide the scope of work based on the vehicle's design and its previous replacement history. On this Tiguan, we also replaced the water pump while the area around the timing belt was disassembled.
Why is the coolant refilled after the replacement?
Replacing the water pump opens the coolant circuit, so coolant must be refilled after reassembly. Have the system checked if the level repeatedly drops afterwards.
