Volvo V60 timing belt: plan replacement before failure

Even when oil is changed regularly, timing-belt history can be overlooked. This 2017 Volvo V60 received a timing belt, rollers and water pump, followed by coolant work. Front and rear brake pads were replaced during the same visit.

Preparing the timing-belt and water-pump replacement

The timing belt keeps engine rotation synchronized. Belt damage can disrupt valve timing and lead to internal damage, so replacement at the appropriate interval is preventive maintenance. This job used a Gates belt-and-roller kit.

A replacement water pump was also prepared. Where the pump is close to the timing-belt work area, as on this car, its condition and history are worth considering when deciding the job's scope.

Installing the water pump, belt and rollers

After removing the old parts, we installed the new water pump, then fitted the timing belt and rollers in the specified alignment.

Refilling coolant

Water-pump replacement requires draining coolant and refilling the system. We used dedicated cooling-system equipment for the refill.

Replacing front and rear brake pads

Front and rear brake pads were replaced with TRW products. We checked the friction material on the removed pads before fitting the new set.

Why replace a timing belt before it fails?

Belt damage can disrupt engine timing and cause internal damage. Preventive replacement at the appropriate interval is intended to avoid that failure.

Why replace the water pump with the timing belt?

On this vehicle, the nearby pump was replaced during the belt work. This can avoid repeating access work, but it is not mandatory on every vehicle. Layout, service history and part condition determine the scope.

How is brake-pad replacement timing decided?

The remaining friction material and wear pattern are inspected directly. Pads and discs should be checked together during routine maintenance.
