Oil leak inspection and four-wheel alignment
Rolls-Royce Ghost: inspecting the hidden areas behind the oil traces
Oil on an exposed surface does not identify the source of a leak by itself. On this Ghost, we inspected the underbody, removed the transmission and torque converter to access the rear of the engine, and measured and adjusted the wheel alignment after the underbody work.

Caring for the refinement of a Ghost
The Ghost combines Rolls-Royce refinement with a more compact body than the Phantom. The first generation debuted in 2009; this vehicle is a 2014 model.
A rare luxury car needs attention beyond its appearance. Checking for oil leaks and measuring wheel alignment helps establish the work the vehicle actually needs.

Oil traces beneath the engine
We inspected the engine bay and underbody on 3 November 2021 at 89,018 km. Oil traces were visible on the oil pan surface and around the joints.
Leak diagnosis involves following the path of the oil. Assuming the oil pan is the source simply because oil is visible at the bottom can miss the actual cause.
We also examined fluid traces around a suspension arm bushing and the condition of the rubber. The odometer read 91,030 km during the follow-up work on 15 December.

Accessing the rear of the engine
The transmission and torque converter were removed in this job. This provided access to the rear of the engine and joints normally concealed by the surrounding components.
We also inspected inside the oil pan area and surrounding covers after disassembly. The necessary access varies with the leak location; diagnosis determines the scope of dismantling.

Covers, gaskets and suspension components
We compared the removed covers and gaskets and examined the oil pan interior and mating surfaces. This allowed the exposed internal areas to be considered alongside the exterior oil traces.
The filter and suspension arms were also checked. Suspension work requires attention to component condition, installation and subsequent wheel alignment.

Adjusting front toe and rear camber
Alignment was measured on 21 December. Front toe was 2.5 mm left and 2.4 mm right, above the range displayed by the equipment. It was adjusted to 1.2 mm and 1.3 mm.
Rear camber was −2.08° left and −1.71° right. Adjusting it to −1.69° and −1.68° reduced the side-to-side difference from 0.37° to 0.01°.
Rear toe changed from −1.0/1.1 mm to 1.3/1.3 mm. The thrust angle, which describes the rear axle’s direction of travel, changed from −0.09° to 0.00°. The diagram and original measurement screens below show the individual changes.

Diagnosis followed by measured checks
Work on this Ghost began with underbody oil traces and included disassembly inspection of the engine rear and oil pan area. After the underbody work, we measured all four wheels and adjusted front toe, rear camber and rear toe.

Does every oil leak require transmission removal?
No. The leak location and surrounding condition are inspected first. This Ghost required access to the engine rear through transmission and torque converter removal. The necessary scope depends on the vehicle and the diagnosis.
Can I simply keep topping up the oil?
Topping up does not resolve the source of a leak. The rate of oil loss, leak location and effects on surrounding components should be assessed to determine the repair timing.
Why check alignment after suspension work?
Alignment should be checked after removing and installing components that support the wheels. Measurements on this Ghost confirmed the need to adjust front toe and rear camber.
Do you only service cars such as Rolls-Royces?
