Bentley Mulsanne Speed · 2023–2026 Maintenance Record

This 2018 Bentley Mulsanne Speed was entrusted to us by a family member of a regular customer. Its four visits, from the first NHC service in 2023 to its return in 2026, form one continuous record: fluids and tyres, front stabiliser parts, brakes and air conditioning, then alignment readings three years after the initial adjustment.

August 2023 - The First Maintenance at NHC Motors

In August 2023, this car’s first maintenance at NHC covered the major fluids, tyres, balancing and wheel alignment. We cleaned the inner wheels, compared drained oil samples and completed a road test after the adjustment.

Maintenance that starts with understanding the car

The Mulsanne was Bentley’s flagship saloon of its era. The Speed was its more driver-focused performance version, combining a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8, an eight-speed ZF transmission, rear-wheel drive and air suspension.

We fitted protective covers to keep the interior and paintwork from being marked during the work, then selected service mode.

Tyre replacement and Hofmann balancing

Both faces of each removed wheel were cleaned. We removed adhesive residue from the old balance weights, applied an iron-removal cleaner, steam-cleaned the surfaces and blew away the remaining water. The less visible inner barrel received the same attention.

For tyre removal and fitting, plastic protectors covered the machine’s wheel-contact points and lubricant was applied. We watched the contact points and working sequence to reduce the risk of marking the wheels.

With the new tyres fitted, we measured the balance on Hofmann equipment. We cleaned adhesive residue and debris from the weight mounting areas and dried them before fitting new weights.

The engine oil change

We collected the drained engine oil to check its condition and quantity, then removed the oil filter. We then passed synthetic oil through the engine and compared its appearance before and after in the containers.

Remaining oil was drawn out by suction and a Bentley-marked filter was fitted. Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 and BG MOA were used on this visit. The filter was secured and the oil level checked with the dipstick.

During an oil change, we also check the drained oil, filter and underbody and use their condition to guide the next inspection.

8-speed transmission oil change

ZF LifeguardFluid 8 was used for the eight-speed ZF transmission. After checking the product identification, we connected the exchange equipment.

During the exchange, we moved through the gear positions from inside the car and watched the fresh fluid going in and the old fluid coming out at the machine.

Power steering oil, exchanged 11 times

For the power steering system, fresh fluid was added, the steering moved left and right, and the fluid drained again. A sample was collected at each stage and the cycle was carried out eleven times.

We placed the eleven samples beside new fluid for comparison. The drained fluid changed from brown tones towards green as the exchange progressed.

The number of exchanges depends on the car’s condition. We carried out eleven on this visit and used the colour changes as a visual guide to the progress of the exchange.

Brake fluid change

The brake fluid reservoir had two sections divided by an internal partition. We attended to both sections, extracted the old fluid, then added and removed fresh fluid before continuing the exchange.

We used BG DOT4 brake fluid. The equipment supplied fresh fluid at the reservoir while old fluid was drawn out at the wheels. We watched the fluid and bubbles passing through the hose.

Rear differential oil

The old rear differential oil was collected for inspection and compared with fresh oil in separate containers. The refill used 75W90 gear oil with BG LSII additive.

The differential contains gears that transmit drive to the wheels. Its oil was inspected and serviced separately from the engine oil.

Alignment measurement and adjustment

After tyre fitting and balancing, we adjusted the four-wheel alignment. Front toe changed from 2.2 mm on the left and 0.1 mm on the right to 1.2 mm per side. Rear toe changed from −0.2 mm on the left and 2.7 mm on the right to 1.6 mm per side.

Intermediate measurements and adjustments were repeated while checking front and rear camber and toe. Caster readings were recorded before and after, and rear thrust angle changed from −0.11° to 0.00°. Final front and rear toe and camber, together with front caster, were within the displayed reference ranges. The readings were checked before the road test.

Finishing up and the maintenance that follows

The engine bay and removed covers were cleaned, dried and reassembled. With the fluids, tyres, balancing and alignment work completed, we finished by checking the car on a road test.

2024

April 2024 - Engine Oil and Front Stabiliser

On 5 April 2024 the engine oil and oil filter were changed. BG EPR engine cleaner was used during the process, and the engine oil was Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30 together with BG MOA. The drained oil was collected in a clear container and inspected, and the lower drain area was tightened with a torque tool.

On the same day the front stabiliser was removed and its links and rubber bushings were replaced. The removed parts and the replacement parts were laid out side by side to compare their form. The cabin filter was renewed and BG 44K was used in the fuel system.

2025

May 2025 - Brakes and Air Conditioning

On 20–21 May 2025, the work included the front and rear brakes and air conditioning. Remaining disc thickness informed the decision to reuse the discs, and a compressor sound heard during air-conditioning operation was checked again after the work.

The vehicle’s oil-level display and service routine

Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30 and BG MOA were used, and the oil filter was replaced.

We checked the vehicle’s oil-level display before the oil change. After replacing the oil and filter, we carried out the service routine with a diagnostic tool.

New pads, with the discs assessed for resurfacing

OEM brake pads were fitted front and rear. The remaining disc thickness was assessed as suitable for resurfacing and reuse, and the discs were machined on Hunter equipment.

We cleaned the hub faces where the discs sit and applied anti-squeal treatment to the backs of the new pads before fitting them.

Compressor-oil specification matters alongside refrigerant quantity

The vehicle label specifies R-1234yf refrigerant, a charge of 840g ±20g, and PAG oil. The refrigerant was analysed and recovered, followed by flushing.

We checked the compressor-oil specification in the vehicle manual before replacing the oil. We used BG Frigi-Quiet for R-1234yf.

When the technician switched on the air conditioning for the on-site check after the work, the previous compressor noise was no longer audible.

Genuine air filters, a cabin filter and tyre repair

Two genuine engine air filters were prepared and fitted. The cabin filter was also replaced.

The tyre contained material from an existing puncture repair. This was removed and the repair was redone using a TECH product.

August 2026 - Fluids and Alignment

On 3–4 August 2026, fluids and filters were changed and the alignment was measured. Front toe and camber were outside the equipment’s indicated range, so they were adjusted. The final 2023 settings were also compared with the readings on arrival in 2026.

We used Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30 and BG MOA and fitted a new oil filter.

We tightened the oil filter and drain with torque tools.

The differential-oil product and specification

MOTOREX GEAR OIL PENTA LS SAE 75W-90, API GL-5 and BG LS II were used for the differential. Samples were collected during draining and filling to inspect their condition.

Brake-fluid exchange reaches the caliper bleeders

BG DOT 5.1 brake fluid was used. Exchange equipment was connected to the reservoir and each caliper bleeder.

We drained the old brake fluid through each caliper bleeder during the exchange.

We exchanged the power-steering fluid with equipment connected to the reservoir and fitted a new cabin filter.

2023 final settings and 2026 arrival readings

These are the same car’s readings after adjustment in August 2023 and on arrival in August 2026. Front toe was lower on both sides, while rear toe was higher. This compares two points in the car’s history, rather than the before and after of one service visit.

Bringing front toe and camber into range

On 4 August, front toe and camber were outside the range displayed by the alignment equipment. Rear toe and camber were already within range before adjustment.

Front toe was adjusted to 1.1mm on each side. After adjustment, four-wheel toe and camber and front caster all appeared within the equipment’s displayed range.

Four Visits, One Continuous Record

The 2023 work covered the major fluids, tyres and alignment; 2024 included engine oil and front stabiliser links and bushings; 2025 covered brakes and air conditioning; and 2026 brought further fluid maintenance and alignment. The work carried out on the same car differed at each visit.

The final 2023 alignment settings provided a reference for the 2026 arrival readings. At the next visit, the service history and fresh measurements can be considered together when deciding what work is needed.

Questions about this Mulsanne’s maintenance

Were all the same items replaced every year?

No. The scope differed by visit: fluids, tyres and alignment in 2023; engine oil and front stabiliser parts in 2024; brakes and air conditioning in 2025; and fluids and alignment in 2026. For another car, the work is determined from its service history and present condition.

Were new brake discs fitted in 2025?

The remaining thickness was assessed and the discs were judged suitable for resurfacing and reuse. They were resurfaced on Hunter equipment, while the front and rear pads were replaced with OEM products.

What was checked after the air-conditioning work?

The technician ran the air conditioning on site and checked the sound again. During that check, the compressor sound heard previously was not audible.

Is the 2023-to-2026 comparison a same-day before-and-after?

No. It compares the final settings after the 2023 adjustment with the arrival readings in 2026. The before-and-after readings from the 2026 work are shown separately.
