E350 suspension service: checking alignment after replacing parts

This E350 came in with suspension noise. We compared the removed arms and bushings with their replacements and serviced the strut components. After assembly, the front toe readings were substantially out, so we adjusted the wheel alignment as well.

Removing the arms reveals the condition of the bushings

Suspension noise alone does not identify the part to replace. The arms, bushings and strut components need to be inspected individually.

We removed the suspension arms to inspect their bushings and joints. We compared the old and replacement components before assembly. The photos show the rubber and central section of the bushings side by side.

We also dismantled and serviced the strut assemblies

We secured the springs with dedicated equipment before dismantling the strut assemblies. We assembled the mounts and related components and replaced suspension linkage parts as well.

Fitting new parts is only part of the job. Once the dismantled connections have been reassembled, wheel alignment needs to be checked.

After assembly, front toe measured -7.5mm and -2.3mm

The readings below compare alignment before and after adjustment, following the suspension work. They are not the vehicle's arrival readings before parts replacement.

Before alignment adjustment, front toe was -7.5mm on the left and -2.3mm on the right. The final readings were 1.1mm and 0.9mm. Rear toe was 2.6mm on each side, with a thrust angle of 0.00°.

After suspension work, both component condition and wheel alignment need attention. Even with new parts, incorrect alignment can affect driving feel and tyre wear.

Tyre replacement and loaded wheel measurements

We replaced the tyres and measured the wheel and tyre assemblies using Hunter equipment. Balancing corrects mass imbalance; RFV measurement applies a roller load to assess variation in radial force. They measure different things.

This service covered the suspension arms and bushings, strut components, alignment adjustment and tyre replacement. When asking about suspension noise or vibration, tell us when the noise occurs and at what speed you feel the problem. This helps narrow down the inspection.

Questions before booking

Does alignment need checking after suspension repairs?

If arms, struts or other parts affecting wheel position have been removed, alignment should be checked after assembly. On this E350, we measured and adjusted toe after the suspension work.

Are the diagram's before readings from before parts replacement?

No. This comparison shows alignment before and after adjustment, following suspension service. It does not establish the readings before the repairs.

Can I discuss suspension noise and high-speed vibration together?

Yes. Tell us whether the problem occurs over bumps, under braking, while steering or at a particular speed. We can then inspect the suspension and wheel and tyre assemblies accordingly.

Does the car still feel unsettled after suspension work?

Tell us which parts were replaced and what noise or vibration remains. We can discuss whether to begin with the suspension, alignment or wheel and tyre assemblies.

We explain the work and cost before proceeding with your agreement.
