Land Rover Discovery 4 Diesel: Is an Oil Change All It Needs?

At each oil service we also checked the front brake pads. At the previous visit we advised that replacement might be due next time. This time we checked the remaining condition again and replaced them preventively at the owner’s request. This Discovery 4 arrived at 110,895 km for engine oil, front pads and filters.

Service history and how the car is used now

Right after the owner bought this car, we carried out an Evans coolant conversion and repaired an engine oil leak, and the car has been serviced with us since then. The owner used to run two cars and has now let one go, so the mileage on this Discovery has been climbing noticeably.

According to the technician, the owner now covers about 10,000 km in three months. Increased use has brought the car in for oil changes more frequently, giving us regular opportunities to revisit previous repairs and consumable condition.

Engine oil and oil filter change, and what we confirmed

No engine oil consumption was observed at this inspection. Checking consumption and oil-leak traces at each service helps us notice changes since the previous visit.

We used MOTOREX SELECT SP-X 5W/30 with BG DOC Diesel Oil Conditioner and replaced the oil filter.

We consider product provenance and quality alongside price, selecting genuine parts or established supply brands for this vehicle.

Front brake pads, and why they were replaced this time

The front pads were not a decision made on the spot. At the previous oil service we had already told the owner that the pads might need replacing at the following visit.

The pads still had usable life, but the owner preferred an early replacement. We explained their condition and carried out the preventive change.

We fitted Textar front pads and applied dedicated brake grease to the pad backing and appropriate contact areas as part of noise-prevention preparation.

Air and cabin filters were decided by their condition

The air filter and cabin filter had been in use for roughly 30,000 km and close to a year. Rather than replacing them on the number alone, we removed them, checked how dirty they were, and then replaced both.

On a car covering substantial mileage in a short period, elapsed months alone do not tell us the condition of the filters. Their actual contamination informed this replacement.

Underbody check and the baseline for the next visit

This car had oil-leak repairs shortly after purchase. During oil services we also inspect the underbody and continue to monitor the areas previously repaired.

We advise in advance which items, such as the pads, should be reviewed next time. Seeing the same car regularly lets us compare changes and distinguish components due for replacement from those with useful life remaining. That is why an oil service is also a regular check-up.

Questions

Do other consumables have to be replaced every time the engine oil is changed?

No. On this car the oil and oil filter were joined by the front pads, air filter and cabin filter, but each had its own reason. The pads had been flagged at the previous visit and the owner chose to bring the change forward; the filters were replaced after checking how dirty they were at around 30,000 km and close to a year. We advise only what the condition calls for.

Is three months or 10,000 km a recommended service interval?

Those figures describe this owner’s recent usage, not a universal replacement interval. Service timing is based on the vehicle’s operating conditions, products and inspection findings.

Is it acceptable to replace brake pads that still have life left?

It is your call. The front pads on this Discovery 4 still had usable life and had not reached the wear limit. The owner preferred to replace them now given the timing of the next visit, so we did. If an owner prefers to keep using them, we check them again at the next visit.

A clear plan for service now and inspection later

We assess the car’s current condition and explain the service priorities and follow-up. The model, mileage and recent service history help us prepare.

We explain the scope of any repairs and the estimate before proceeding with your approval.
