BMW X5 E70 in our care for over 10 years: preventive spark plug and coil replacement

An X5 we have looked after for more than ten years. As planned at the last oil change, we replaced all six spark plugs and all six coils preventively on this visit.

This 2010 BMW X5 E70 35i is a car we have maintained for over ten years. At the last engine oil change, we suggested replacing the spark plugs and coils preventively on the next visit.

Replaced before anything failed

The car was not brought in for a sudden ignition fault. Having maintained it for years, we could use its service history to decide when to replace the parts.

Opening the cowl to reach the rear coils

Of the six ignition positions, the rear ones sit under the cowl below the windshield. Forcing a hand into the narrow gap can snap connector latches or kink wiring, so we removed the parts around the cowl to create working space.

With each coil pulled, we unscrewed the plugs one at a time from the openings.

Six new plugs, six new coils

We laid the removed plugs next to the new ones to confirm they matched. The tips showed signs of use.

We likewise matched the six removed coils against the new BOSCH coils, seated them in place, and pushed each connector fully home one by one. After routing the wiring so nothing was pinched or pulled tight, we reassembled the cowl and surrounding parts.

Engine oil changed, and a note on rainwater at the firewall

The engine oil was changed to Shell HELIX ULTRA 5W-30 with a new oil filter, and a quick drain plug was fitted to the drain outlet. Tire pressures were set to 34psi front and rear with the tires warm, and the washer fluid was topped up.

Rainwater can enter around the E70 firewall, so we advised the owner to keep an eye on the firewall and cowl area. No rainwater leak repair was carried out on this visit.
