BMW 528i: replacing the valve cover before refilling the oil

Repairing an oil-leak path and changing oil on time are separate maintenance tasks. This 2015 BMW 528i received a new valve cover, Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 engine oil and filter, BG MOA treatment and a brake-fluid change.

Valve-cover replacement

The valve cover seals the top of the engine. If its gasket loses sealing ability, oil can seep out. We removed the related upper-engine components, took off the old cover and installed a new one.

The engine oil and filter were changed during the valve-cover job.

Cover tightening and checks around the engine

A torque wrench was used during installation. The specified tightening order and settings help the cover and gasket seat evenly.

After assembly, we also inspected the lower engine and exhaust area for other work that might be needed.

Engine oil, filter and BG MOA

We changed the engine oil to Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30, fitted a new filter and added BG MOA, a supplementary product intended to support oil performance.

A new valve cover does not replace routine oil maintenance. Oil deteriorates in service and still needs changing at appropriate intervals. Our routine maintenance guide explains the other items to keep track of.

Brake-fluid replacement

The brake fluid was changed using dedicated equipment. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and prolonged use can affect braking performance.

Even on a low-mileage car, the date of the last brake-fluid change needs checking.

Why replace a valve cover?

Loss of sealing at the cover or gasket can let engine oil seep out. A new cover, tightened to specification, restores the sealing components.

Is a treatment such as BG MOA required at every oil change?

It is optional rather than essential and supplements the oil. This car received BG MOA with its Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 change.

Why does brake fluid need periodic replacement?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Its condition and service history need checking even when the car covers little distance.
