BMW 440i G22 Transmission Fluid Change with ZF LifeguardFluid 8 and BG PXT

Automatic transmission fluid does more than lubricate. It transmits hydraulic pressure inside the transmission and governs the friction characteristics as the clutches engage and release. Viscosity and friction characteristics differ between transmissions, and shift quality is maintained only with fluid that meets the specification for the transmission fitted. For this change we used ZF LifeguardFluid 8.

We also recorded the product name in the service history. Using the same product at the next change or top-up keeps fluid of a different specification from being mixed in.

Circulation exchange with BG PXT equipment

Draining through the drain plug alone may not remove all the fluid from inside the transmission and its passages, including the torque converter and fluid lines. A circulation exchange uses the fluid flow inside the transmission to push old fluid out while new fluid is supplied. This replaces a higher proportion of the fluid than draining alone. On this car, we connected BG PXT equipment and did a circulation exchange.

During the job we watched the fluid flow through the equipment's clear sight window. Toward the end of the job we checked the fluid condition in the window again. The sight window lets you watch the exchange as it happens. How much lighter the color gets does not tell you how much the shifting has improved.

The amount the equipment supplies is not the same as the amount that finally stays in the transmission. That is why automatic transmission fluid level must be checked and set at the fluid temperature specified for each transmission. If you notice shift shock or delayed shifts after the change, tell us whether it happens with the car cold or warmed up, and in which gear.
