Bentley Flying Spur: looking beyond toe adjustment

A luxury saloon needs more than matching toe readings. On this Flying Spur, we also adjusted the front subframe position to reduce the left-to-right camber and caster differences.

Where should a Flying Spur suspension check begin?

The front toe readings were −0.6 mm on the left and 3.0 mm on the right. Front camber differed by 0.50°, and caster by 0.36°. Adjusting the track rods alone would not address all of those differences.

We checked the alignment procedure for this chassis and included the front subframe position in the work. The aim was to improve the relationship between the two sides, as well as the direction of each wheel.

Set the suspension at its working height

Bonded rubber bushes flex as the suspension moves. Tightening their fasteners with the suspension hanging can leave the rubber twisted when the vehicle returns to its normal height.

Ride-height tightening addresses that assembly condition. We worked through the relevant suspension connections and then adjusted the subframe and alignment. It is the position of the suspension when tightened that matters, not simply how tightly a bolt is secured.

The front readings became more balanced

Front toe finished at 1.1 / 1.1 mm. The left-to-right camber difference fell from 0.50° to 0.14°, and the caster difference from 0.36° to 0.06°.

The final caster readings, 7.56° and 7.62°, still exceed the screen’s upper reference of 7.50°. The original screens below retain those readings, alongside the improvements in the other measurements.

Wheel alignment and tyre road force are separate checks

The Hunter Road Force machine applies roller load to evaluate force variation in the tyre-and-wheel assembly. Correct balance weights alone do not establish that its loaded behaviour is satisfactory.

The two screens show current assembly readings of 21.5 kg and 19.0 kg, with rim runout of 0.08 mm and 0.11 mm respectively. These are separate measurement records, not a before-and-after pair. High road force remained in these records despite tyre matching work.

Oil service and the next inspection

The visit also included oil-service work with a MAHLE filter and BG EPR. Residue observed around the oil-filter work led to advice to bring the next oil change forward and inspect it again.

For a suspension consultation, bring any earlier alignment reports and describe when the car feels different. We use that history with the measurements to decide what needs adjustment and what needs further attention.

Questions before booking

Does ride-height tightening replace wheel alignment?

No. It sets the working position of the relevant rubber-bushed joints. Wheel alignment then checks and adjusts the wheel geometry.

Did every final measurement fall within the displayed range?

No. The front caster readings remained above the displayed upper reference, although the difference between the two sides became smaller.
