Audi SQ8: an oil service is also a chance to inspect the car

With the SQ8 on a lift for its oil service, we checked areas that are difficult to see during everyday use. Alongside the oil and filters, we inspected the coolant, underside of the drivetrain and cabin filtration.

We examine the oil we drain

We removed the filter, checked its housing and collected the drained oil. The used oil and filter are also examined during the service.

We record how much oil goes in and how much comes out at the next service. Top-ups, distance travelled and drainage conditions matter too. Comparing these records helps identify changes in oil consumption.

Checking the drain plug and filter housing

We checked the drain plug and washer and tightened the plug with a torque wrench. Correct assembly around the drain and filter is important to prevent oil leaks.

Removed filters show why condition matters

We removed the engine air and cabin filters and compared them with their replacements. Dust and signs of use that were hidden inside the housings were visible on the filters.

The engine and passengers receive air through different filters. We inspect both during an oil service and assess replacement according to their individual condition and service interval.

Coolant and underbody inspection during the same visit

We checked a coolant sample and inspected the drivetrain from underneath. These areas can be missed when looking only from above the engine.

Comparing the same areas at later visits helps distinguish new wet patches and oil leakage. Regular checks during oil services make small changes easier to spot.

Does a low drained-oil quantity mean the engine needs repair?

The previous fill, any top-ups, distance travelled and drainage conditions all need to be considered. Several service records make an increase in consumption easier to identify.
