CLS63 AMG: vibration through the steering wheel and seat at speed

Vibration remained at higher speeds after repairing the bent wheel. Tyre replacement substantially improved the driving vibration. Brake judder and suspension noise while steering were investigated separately.

Vibration reached the body as well as the steering wheel

On arrival, vibration reached the steering wheel, seat and body as speed increased. Inspection found a bent right front wheel and uneven tyre wear around its circumference.

When a wheel is distorted and its tyre has worn unevenly, correction weights alone may not solve the problem. We examined wheel shape and tyre condition separately.

Checking the tyres when vibration remained after wheel repair

We first repaired the bent wheel and tested the car on its existing tyres. Vibration reduced, but some remained at higher speeds.

After replacing the tyres, the original steering-wheel, seat and body vibration improved substantially. We explained the difference between the wheel repair alone and the subsequent tyre replacement to the customer.

New tyres also need careful fitting

After fitting the tyres, we checked road force under load and wheel balance with Hunter equipment. Tyre-to-rim positions were adjusted and measured again.

Fitting quality affects how even a good tyre drives. We checked balance correction and testing under load as separate items, along with the positions of all four wheels.

Brake judder and noise while steering were checked separately

There was also judder that worsened with repeated braking. We checked front-disc runout, and the customer report noted greater distortion at the right front disc.

Noise from the left front occurred when moving forwards or backwards with substantial right steering lock, and the CV joint/driveshaft was replaced. Vibration at a particular speed and noise while turning require separate checks.

Does it vibrate while driving, or when you brake?

This vehicle showed a difference between wheel repair alone and wheel repair followed by tyre replacement. Braking and steering concerns were investigated at their relevant components.
