Jeep Compass: alternator bearing play and auxiliary belt service
The removed alternator showed bearing play. We also inspected the pulleys and tensioner driven by the same belt and replaced the auxiliary belt set.

Moving the shaft of the removed alternator revealed play. The internal bearing was damaged.
The alternator generates electricity but receives its drive from the engine through a belt. Both the alternator and the surrounding belt components need attention.

Following the auxiliary belt route
We checked the belt route in the vehicle's service information and accessed the area through the wheel housing. Several pulleys and tensioning components sit around the alternator.
A belt that looks sound does not prove that its bearings are sound. We also check play and movement in the rotating components.

Replacing the alternator and auxiliary belt set
We compared the removed parts with the replacement pulleys and tensioner, fitted the alternator and replaced the auxiliary belt.
After assembly in the confined space, the belt must be seated correctly on each pulley. Belt tracking and charging operation also need checking.

Do not ignore charging warnings or rotating noises
On this Compass, we confirmed alternator bearing damage and replaced the alternator and auxiliary belt set.
If charging problems return after battery replacement, or a rotating noise changes around the engine, the alternator and belt system also need checking.
