2019 Ford Mustang 5.0 transmission fluid service: valve body removal and new filter

We opened the transmission oil pan on a 2019 Ford Mustang 5.0, removed the valve body and installed a new filter. After reassembling the underside, we changed the transmission fluid by supplying FUCHS TITAN ATF 8400 ULV through an exchange machine.

Both may be called a transmission fluid change, but how does changing only the fluid differ from opening the oil pan and replacing the filter as well? On this Mustang 5.0, we opened the oil pan, removed the valve body and installed a new filter. After reassembling the underside, we connected the exchange machine and changed the fluid with FUCHS TITAN ATF 8400 ULV.

A fluid-only exchange leaves the transmission filter in place. Replacing the filter requires opening the transmission underside, so the work scope differs.

We opened the oil pan and removed the valve body

We opened the underside of the transmission and drained the old fluid. After removing the oil pan, we also removed the valve body. The photo shows the valve body out of the car along with its connected wiring.

The valve body controls the paths hydraulic pressure takes inside the transmission. Several wiring connectors and connections attach to it, so their positions have to be noted on removal and each one returned precisely to the same place on reassembly.

We installed a new filter and reassembled the underside

We inspected the inside of the transmission and the removed parts, then installed a new filter. The filter catches debris mixed into the fluid. A fluid change and a filter replacement differ in scope, so it is worth checking whether the filter was also replaced at the previous service.

When reassembling the underside, we make sure the filter is seated properly, the wiring is not pinched or snagged, and the oil pan mating surface sits evenly. If any of these is off, fluid pickup can become unstable or fluid can leak from the joint.

We changed the fluid with FUCHS ATF; the machine supplied 10.4 quarts of new fluid

After assembly, we connected the exchange machine and changed the transmission fluid with FUCHS TITAN ATF 8400 ULV. Draining the oil pan alone may not remove all the fluid in the torque converter and fluid lines, so we circulated fluid with the machine to replace it with new fluid and watched the flow through the machine's sight window during the exchange.

The 10.4 quarts on the machine's completion screen is the amount of new fluid the machine supplied during the exchange. It is not the transmission's total capacity or the final amount remaining. The final fluid level is judged by checking the level at the fluid temperature specified for each transmission.

If you notice harsh or delayed shifts, please tell us whether it happens when the car is cold or after a good drive, and whether it is when pulling away or slowing down. We will use the details of this filter and fluid change to decide where to inspect.

10.4 quarts is the amount of new fluid the machine supplied. The final fluid level is judged by checking the level at the specified fluid temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Do you remove the valve body at every fluid change?

No. The scope of work depends on the purpose of the service and the vehicle's condition. On this Mustang, valve body removal and filter replacement were done together, which is a different scope from a simple circulation exchange.

Is 10.4 quarts this car's total transmission capacity?

No. It is the amount of new fluid the exchange machine supplied during the job. It is not the total transmission capacity or the final amount remaining; the final fluid level is judged by checking the level at the fluid temperature specified for the transmission.

If there is a shift shock, is changing the fluid enough?

The conditions under which the shock appears, any fault codes, and the condition of the fluid and parts need to be looked at together. If you tell us the previous scope of work along with when it happens, such as cold or hot or in a particular gear, we can decide the order of inspection.
