BMW X5 E70 30d: Front Toe at -10.1 and -10.5 mm After Front Suspension Replacement, Then a Four-Wheel Alignment
On a 2011 BMW X5 E70 30d, we replaced the front tension struts, lower control arms and tie rods on both sides and also replaced the front stabilizer link. After the parts replacement, front toe before adjustment was -10.1 and -10.5 mm. Using a HUNTER HawkEye Elite 3D system, we matched left and right at 1.2 mm front and 1.6 mm rear.

Why does the alignment need checking again after new front suspension parts go in? The arms locate the wheels and the tie rods set their direction, so replacing them sets new wheel angles.
On this 2011 BMW X5 E70 30d, we replaced the front tension struts, lower control arms and steering tie rods on both sides and also replaced the front stabilizer link. After the parts replacement and before alignment adjustment, front toe measured -10.1 mm left and -10.5 mm right. We measured all four wheels with a HUNTER HawkEye Elite 3D system. We then adjusted front toe to 1.2 mm and rear toe to 1.6 mm, both sides equal front and rear.

We replaced the arms and tie rods that locate the front wheels, on both sides
The front suspension brings together parts with different jobs. The lower control arm holds the bottom of the wheel. The tension strut keeps the wheel from being pushed forward or backward. The tie rod passes steering wheel movement to the wheel. This time we replaced all three on both sides. We also replaced the front stabilizer link, which connects the stabilizer bar to the suspension. After removing the old parts, we fitted the new ones and worked around the steering connections.
Once parts that set wheel position have been replaced, the angles must be measured again.

After the parts replacement, front toe was out at -10.1 and -10.5 mm
Right after the parts replacement, the wheel angles needed to be set again. Front toe before alignment adjustment was -10.1 mm left and -10.5 mm right. Toe describes whether the fronts of the wheels point inward or outward when viewed from above. A negative value means they point outward.
The tie rod sets toe through its length. With a new tie rod, even a small difference in thread position changes toe considerably. At the rear, toe before adjustment also differed side to side, at 1.1 mm and 2.1 mm, and rear camber was -1.38° and -1.67°. So we did not stop at the front and adjusted all four wheels.

Front toe set to 1.2 mm and rear toe to 1.6 mm, matched left and right
After adjustment, front toe was 1.2 mm on both sides and rear toe was 1.6 mm on both sides. We also adjusted rear camber to -1.52° and -1.49°, bringing left and right closer together.
Positive toe front and rear means the fronts of the wheels point slightly inward. Even with left and right matched, camber, caster and the direction the rear wheels are tracking still need to be checked. Equal toe on both sides alone does not mean every driving issue is solved.
After the new bushings settle, the steering wheel may go off center or the car may feel like it pulls to one side. If so, tell us what kind of road and what speed it happens at. We will measure again and compare against these adjustment values to find what has changed.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an alignment after replacing suspension parts?
If parts that set wheel position, such as arms or tie rods, have been removed or replaced, the angles must be measured again. On this X5, front toe was out at -10.1 and -10.5 mm after the parts replacement, so adjustment was needed.
Why adjust the rear when the work was on the front suspension?
The rear wheels set the direction the car travels. On this X5, rear toe before adjustment differed side to side at 1.1 mm and 2.1 mm. We set both sides to 1.6 mm and adjusted rear camber as well.
Isn't setting toe to 0 mm always best?
Each vehicle has its own specified settings, so 0 mm may not be the target. On this X5, we set 1.2 mm front and 1.6 mm rear, with the fronts of the wheels pointing slightly inward and left and right matched.
Front suspension noise or pulling: we check how far to replace and all four wheel angles
The front may clunk over speed bumps, or the steering wheel may shake and the car pull to one side. If so, we will compare the arms, bushings, tie rods and links side to side and decide how far the replacement should go. After replacing parts, we measure all four wheels and show you the before and after values. Tell us when the symptoms appear and about any previous suspension replacements, then get in touch through consultation and booking.
We explain the work and estimate before proceeding with your consent.
