BMW X5: inspect the mounts before replacing the complete struts

Do struts and mounts always need replacing together? On this X5, we dismantled the strut assemblies and replaced the mounts and rubber mounts. The vehicle was a 2011 X5 35i with 113,351km on the odometer.

Checking the connections that support the struts

The mount connecting the strut to the body deserves attention alongside the strut itself. Age changes the elasticity of rubber components, and their condition can affect how impacts and vibration reach the cabin.

We inspected the suspension connections and wheel housings, then removed the left and right strut assemblies to replace the mounts.

Removing the struts and compressing the springs

Both strut assemblies were removed from the vehicle. Each assembly combines the damper, spring and mount, so replacing the mount still requires removing and dismantling the assembly.

The installed coil spring stores considerable force and must not simply be released. We secured the assembly in a spring compressor before dismantling it.

Fitting new mounts and reinstalling the assemblies

After comparing the removed mounts with the replacements, we fitted new strut mounts and rubber mounts. The parts were assembled in the specified order and orientation.

The completed assemblies were reinstalled. After suspension components are removed and refitted, the fastenings and vehicle alignment should also be checked as appropriate.

Questions before booking

Can the mounts be replaced without replacing the struts?

That depends on the condition of the struts. In this job, the assemblies were dismantled and the mounts and rubber mounts replaced. Inspection may show that the struts also need replacing on another vehicle.

Why is a spring compressor needed?

An installed coil spring is under substantial compression. It must be held securely with suitable equipment while the strut assembly is dismantled and rebuilt.

What should be checked after mount replacement?

The disturbed fastenings should be checked, along with alignment where the work requires it. Some bonded rubber suspension bushings require final tightening at a manufacturer-specified ride height; the procedure depends on the joint.
