BMW M5 engine and differential oil service, with tires nearing replacement
A 2013 M5 that is driven little but serviced on a time-based schedule. We replaced the engine oil and filter and the rear differential oil, and found no oil or coolant leaks. With the tires cracking and low on tread, we recommended getting replacements ready in advance.
The owner of this 2013 BMW M5 doesn't cover many miles a year but has kept the oil on a schedule based on months. This time we replaced the engine oil and the rear differential oil. The inspection found no signs of oil or coolant leaks.
The tires were what stood out. With their age, the rubber surface had cracked and there wasn't much tread left. Because the size is uncommon, we recommended having replacement tires lined up ahead of time.

An M5 driven little but serviced on time
The owner has kept up with oil changes by time, even though the car covers few miles.
We drained the used oil from under the engine, fitted a new oil filter, and filled with MOTOREX FS-P 0W-40 plus the engine oil additive BG MOA.

Drain plug torque and oil level, done properly
We checked the service information for the filter and drain plug tightening specifications. We then tightened the drain plug with a torque wrench. Too loose, it could seep; too tight, the threads could be damaged.
The 9.5L shown in the service information is a reference capacity including the filter. We confirmed the actual oil level after the change by checking that the electronic level screen showed ‘Engine oil level OK’. During the same visit we also replaced the cabin filter.

Rear differential oil replaced as well
The rear differential uses a different oil from the engine. We drained the old oil, filled with MOTOREX GEAR OIL PENTA LS (SAE 75W140, API GL-5), and added BG LS II, an additive for limited-slip axles.

The tires are close to replacement
With the car on the lift, we put a depth gauge into the tire grooves at several points. There wasn't much tread left, and because the tires are old, cracks were visible in the rubber surface. We set the pressures to 35psi front and rear. The tires were not replaced on this visit.
Tires in the M5's size are uncommon and can be hard to get quickly when you need them. That's why we recommended having replacement tires ready in advance.

Frequently asked questions
Does a cracked tire need replacing even if some tread is left?
We decide by looking at the extent of the cracking, the remaining tread and the tire's age together. On this car the tread was low and cracking was visible, and given that the size is uncommon, we recommended having replacement tires ready in advance.
Should the differential oil be changed every time the engine oil is?
The two oils serve different components and have different change intervals. We set the timing based on each unit's last change and current condition; on this M5 we replaced the engine oil and the rear differential oil as separate jobs.
