BMW 535i GT transmission overhaul and an EMF that locked on the tow truck
The 2010 535i GT would not shift. We opened the transmission and found a broken metal part inside, then completed the overhaul and replaced the torque converter. Its electronic parking brake locked on the tow truck and is scheduled for replacement after Chuseok.
A 2010 BMW 535i GT that would not shift arrived on a tow truck. Before we could get it off, the electronic parking brake (EMF) locked on the truck.
Inside the removed transmission we found a broken metal part. The overhaul and torque converter replacement are complete. The EMF remains deactivated and is scheduled for replacement after the Chuseok holiday.

The codes did not identify the damaged part, so we opened the transmission
The control unit had stored a clutch-related gear-ratio monitoring code and a code for unintended power transfer in neutral. An automatic transmission combines several internal clutches to select a gear. When the input and output speed ratio does not match the selected gear, it can log these codes.
The codes told us that the ratio was wrong, not which part had failed. We compared them with the no-shift symptom, removed the transmission and opened it.

Broken metal fragments were inside
A metal part taken from the housing was broken at the edge, with pieces that had come off beside it. Fragments may have circulated in the oil, so we separated the friction plates and nearby components one by one to check them.
Fresh fluid cannot put a broken part back together. The damage we found called for a transmission overhaul.

We completed the overhaul and replaced the torque converter
During the overhaul, we removed the valve body and solenoids, which direct oil pressure to the clutches. We replaced the torque converter between the engine and transmission, then filled the reassembled transmission with ZF LifeGuard Fluid 8.
With the transmission out, we could reach the round seal at the back of the engine. We compared the removed seal with the new one and fitted the replacement with a dedicated tool. The crankshaft position sensor was also replaced with an OEM part.
The transmission overhaul carried a warranty of 1 year / 20,000 km under the terms in place when the work was done. After the overhaul, pay attention to the first pull-away when the car is cold and to shifts after a longer drive. If there is a shock or delay, tell us which gear and when it happens.

The parking brake that locked on the tow truck is due for replacement after Chuseok
With the EMF locked, getting the car off the tow truck was difficult. Emergency release mode did not free it, so we cut the parking-brake cable before moving the car onto the lift. At our shop we also see EMF faults on aging examples of this model and the X5 (E70) and X6 (E71).
The EMF is deactivated for now, which means the parking brake does not work. The EMF is scheduled for replacement after Chuseok; that replacement was not part of the completed transmission overhaul.

Wouldn't changing the transmission fluid fix the shifting problem?
Changing the fluid cannot repair a broken part. We found a fractured metal part inside this 535i GT's transmission, so we carried out an overhaul and replaced the torque converter.
What if the EMF won't release even in emergency release mode?
Emergency release mode did not free the EMF on this car. We cut the parking-brake cable to move it onto the lift. If yours is locked, contact us before transport so we can discuss how to bring the car in.
