2015 BMW 528i AGM Battery Test and Replacement

This 2015 BMW 528i came in for a battery check and replacement. We first measured the battery's current condition with a Midtronics CPX900 tester, then replaced it with an AGM battery of the same specification as the original.

2015 BMW 528i — in for battery testing and replacement

Midtronics CPX900 result: 560CCA measured against a 950CCA rating, 12.13V, 11 °C, AGM — verdict 'Charge & Retest'

Original BMW (Banner) 105Ah 950A AGM replaced with a FIAMM ecoFORCE VR950 L6 AGM 105Ah 950A (EN)

Capacity, cranking rating, and AGM type all kept to the same specification

Midtronics CPX900 Test Result

The Midtronics CPX900 recorded 560 CCA against a 950 CCA rating, 12.13 V and 11°C. Its result was Charge & Retest.

State of charge can affect the reading. The 560 CCA figure alone is not an end-of-life verdict; the tester’s charge-and-retest instruction and vehicle history both matter.

'Charge & Retest' Does Not Mean the Battery Is Dead

The tester called for charging and retesting. A low state of charge can reduce the measured CCA.

This visit proceeded to battery replacement after inspection. The removed and replacement battery specifications are listed below.

Replacing with a Same-Specification AGM Battery

The battery originally fitted was a genuine BMW unit (manufactured by Banner), 105Ah 950A AGM. We replaced it with a FIAMM ecoFORCE VR950 L6 AGM, 105Ah 950A (EN) — keeping the capacity, cranking rating, and AGM type identical.

Because BMW's electronics manage the battery's charging, changing the specification arbitrarily can throw off that management, so keeping the same specification is the rule. This model also requires the new battery to be registered to the car after replacement, and this job was taken in as a battery replacement and coding job.

Questions about this work

If the battery tester says 'Charge & Retest', does the battery have to be replaced?

No. An undercharged battery can measure lower CCA than its real capability, so the verdict means charge it and test again. The diagnostic verdict and the replacement decision are separate, and we judge them together with the car's condition.

Can any battery be used in a BMW as long as the capacity matches?

On an AGM-specification car, the AGM type, capacity, and cranking rating should be kept identical to the original, and the new battery needs to be registered to the car after replacement.

Does the Engine Feel Slow to Crank?

The right order for battery service is to measure the current condition with a tester first, then decide between charging with a retest or replacement. When you book a consultation, it helps to have your history ready — any recent flat-battery events, whether you mostly drive short distances, and whether a dashcam draws constant power.

We explain the scope of any repairs and the estimate before proceeding with your approval.
