Mercedes-Benz E350d alternator replacement and careful reassembly of the surrounding pipes

At 237,819 km, this 2017 E350d W213 needed an alternator replacement. Access required removing surrounding pipes; we checked the intake-pipe seal during reassembly and refilled the opened coolant circuit with Mercedes-Benz coolant.

We replaced the alternator on this 2017 Mercedes-Benz E350d W213 at 237,819 km. It sits deep in the engine bay, behind pipes that had to be moved before a tool could reach it.

We compared the old and new alternators before installation, then reassembled the removed pipes and checked the circular seal at the intake-pipe connection. We refilled the coolant circuit that had been opened for access.

Removing the surrounding pipes to reach the alternator

We first removed pipes passing in front of the alternator mounting position. Access to a deeply mounted part means more joints must be reopened and correctly refitted afterward.

We placed the removed alternator beside its replacement before fitting it. Driven by the engine belt, the alternator charges the battery and supplies the electrical system. Its mounting points, belt pulley and electrical terminals all have to align.

Odometer 237,819 km at the time of work; 3,156.4 km is the trip reading.

Checking the intake-pipe seal during reassembly

With the intake pipe off, we checked its end and the circular seal in the joint. The seal seat and mating surfaces are hidden once the pipe is back in place.

The seal must sit in its groove and the pipe must be fully connected to avoid an intake-air leak. We reassembled this joint after the alternator replacement.

We refilled the circuit opened during the work with Mercedes-Benz coolant. A falling coolant level or a wet pipe joint afterward calls for another check.

A charging warning is not always a battery problem

If a charging warning appears or starting becomes weak, we check the alternator output and wiring as well as the battery. Tell us when the warning appears and which electrical equipment is in use so we can examine the system under similar conditions.

Can a charging warning remain after a battery replacement?

Yes. The battery, alternator and wiring have different roles. Replacing the battery alone does not establish that the charging system is working.

Must surrounding pipes come off to replace an alternator?

It depends on the vehicle and mounting position. On this E350d, pipes were removed for access and the intake-pipe joint and circular seal were checked during reassembly.

Why was coolant needed during an alternator job?

The work opened a nearby circuit that was refilled with Mercedes-Benz coolant. Afterward, check the coolant level with the engine cold.
