Lexus NX Michelin tires: Road Force adjusted again after the test drive

We fitted the four Michelin tires the owner requested and matched them on a Road Force machine. After the high-speed test drive changed the readings, we measured and adjusted them again before release.

2024 Lexus NX

This 2024 Lexus NX came in for tire replacement. We prepared four Michelin PRIMACY TOUR A/S tires as the owner requested. Even a good tire needs to be matched carefully to its wheel.

Road Force was the focus of this job. Ride quality improved and vibration fell markedly on the before-and-after test drives. A high-speed run then changed the readings, so we measured and matched the wheels again before releasing the car.

Matching each new tire to its wheel

The tires were 235/60R18 107V XL. After mounting them, we measured weight imbalance and Road Force on each wheel.

A conventional balancer checks how weight is distributed around a wheel and tire. A Road Force machine presses on the tire with a roller and measures RFV: how much force changes as it rolls under load. The wheel-and-tire pairing affects that reading, so we used the measurements to adjust where each tire sat on its wheel. This can reveal vibration that remains after weight balancing.

We set tire pressure to 33psi after mounting.

Adjusting the direction of all four wheels

After fitting the tires, we measured all four wheel angles and adjusted front and rear toe. A wheel that points off course can wear a new tire unevenly.

Matching Road Force again after the high-speed run

Ride quality improved and vibration fell markedly on the before-and-after test drives. After the high-speed run, though, a tire had moved slightly on its wheel and the Road Force target had shifted.

We put the wheel back on the machine and matched the changed reading. We checked both the driving feel and the measurement before releasing the NX.

Will Michelin tires alone stop the vibration?

Tire choice is only part of it. On this NX we matched the mounted assemblies on a Road Force machine and checked the change on a test drive.

Why not release the car as soon as the tires are fitted?

A tire moved slightly on its wheel during this car’s high-speed test drive, changing the Road Force target. We measured and adjusted it again before release.
