BMW 8 Series: why is the driver's side a different temperature?
This 8 Series had a left-to-right temperature difference of more than 10°C. The driver's air-conditioning flap was not operating correctly, and an attempt to initialise it revealed a BDC communication problem. After restoring communication, we initialised the flap and restored its operation.

Left and right temperatures differed by more than 10°C
The driver's air-conditioning flap was malfunctioning, causing a large temperature difference between the two sides. Uneven cooling did not, by itself, justify starting with a refrigerant recharge.
We checked the air-conditioning system and control units with the diagnostic tool and attempted flap initialisation. Communication with the BDC module was unavailable, so this had to be addressed first.

First, we resolved the problem preventing initialisation
After restoring BDC communication, we ran the air-conditioning flap calibration function. Resolving the communication issue allowed the initialisation procedure to proceed correctly.
The diagnostic instructions describe measuring the flaps' travel and end positions. This allows the control unit to establish the movement range of the flap motors again.

After restoring operation, we checked the temperatures again
After initialisation, we confirmed that the flap operated normally and checked the temperature difference again. In the post-work video, the technician reports a difference of about 3°C.
“It was more than 10 degrees before, but now the difference is about 3 degrees.”
— Technician checking temperatures after the work
These are the readings observed on this vehicle after the work. A 3°C difference is not a universal standard for normal operation. We assessed both flap operation and the change in temperature difference.

One side less cool? Tell us which side and when it happens
In this case, restoring BDC communication and initialising the flap resolved the problem. Similar cooling complaints can require different work: some concern the refrigerant circuit, while others involve air distribution or control systems.
When booking, tell us which side is uncomfortable and whether it responds when you change the temperature setting. We will check actual operation and explain the work needed.

Questions before booking
Does one side being less cool mean the refrigerant is low?
The refrigerant circuit, air-conditioning flaps and control units all need consideration. This car had a malfunctioning driver's flap and a communication issue preventing initialisation.
Will initialisation alone fix it?
On this car, BDC communication had to be restored before initialisation could proceed. Component condition and communication faults determine the appropriate action.
What was the temperature difference after the work?
It was more than 10°C before the work and about 3°C in the post-work video. These readings apply to this vehicle; they are not a universal normal range.
Is one side still uncomfortable with the air conditioning on?
Tell us about the temperature difference, airflow direction and response to setting changes. We will compare diagnostic results with actual operation and explain the necessary work.
We explain the work and cost before proceeding with your agreement.
