BMW 530i Driveshaft Boot and Seal Replacement with Wheel Alignment: What Total Toe Alone Misses

We serviced the driveshaft boots, seals and fluids on a 2019 BMW 530i. Rear total toe read 3.4mm both before and after adjustment, but the left and right values changed from 0.1mm and 3.3mm to 1.7mm and 1.7mm.

If the total on an alignment report is within range, does that mean both wheels are set correctly? On this BMW 530i, rear total toe was within the normal range. The left side read 0.1mm and the right 3.3mm, a large difference between the two sides.

We serviced the engine oil and filters, replaced the front driveshaft boots and seals, and then adjusted the four-wheel alignment.

We replaced the engine oil, oil filter and air filter

We replaced the engine oil, oil filter and air filter, and added BG MOA. The oil filter cleans the oil circulating through the engine. The air filter cleans the air the engine draws in. This time, both filters were replaced together.

We replaced the front driveshaft boots and seals

We replaced the left and right outer boots on the front driveshafts and the housing seals. A boot is a rubber cover that encloses the constant-velocity (CV) joint. It holds the grease inside and keeps water and debris out. A seal closes off the point where the shaft enters the housing.

The driveshafts were removed for the work, and the surrounding area was cleaned. The front differential oil was changed to Motorex 75W/90. When boots or seals are serviced, the oil and grease around them should be cleaned off as well. A clean area makes it easier to check their condition afterward.

Rear total toe was normal, but the left and right sides differed

Before adjustment, rear toe read 0.1mm on the left and 3.3mm on the right. The alignment machine showed the 3.4mm total as within the normal range. The individual toe values on both sides were out of range. The screen showed an individual rear-toe reference range of 1.3–2.1 mm.

We set each side to 1.7mm. The total stayed at 3.4mm, and the rear thrust angle changed from −0.12° to 0.00°. If you check only the total, you can miss wheels that are set unevenly like this.

Before adjustment: rear toe left 0.1mm, right 3.3mm, total 3.4mm, thrust angle −0.12°.
Before adjustment: rear toe left 0.1mm, right 3.3mm, total 3.4mm, thrust angle −0.12°.
After adjustment: rear toe 1.7mm on each side, total 3.4mm, thrust angle 0.00°.
After adjustment: rear toe 1.7mm on each side, total 3.4mm, thrust angle 0.00°.

After setting the rear, we adjusted the front toe

Once the rear was adjusted, we set the front toe. Left and right went from 3.4mm and 3.0mm to 1.2mm and 1.3mm respectively. Both readings were within the screen’s reference range after adjustment.

If suspension or driveline components have been removed for service, the wheel alignment should also be checked after reassembly. Replacing parts and setting the direction the wheels point should be handled together.

Total rear toe was 3.4 mm both before and after. Yet the left-to-right difference fell from 3.2 mm to 0.0 mm. The −0.12° thrust angle was already green on the first screen. An in-range total still calls for checking each wheel.

Frequently asked questions

If the rear total toe didn't change, what did the adjustment achieve?

It changed how the wheels point. On this car, rear toe went from 0.1/3.3mm to 1.7/1.7mm. The 3.4mm total stayed the same, but the direction of the left and right wheels changed, and the thrust angle went from −0.12° to 0.00°. Looking only at the total can miss this difference.

If the boots and seals were replaced, does that mean the driveshaft is new?

No. Boots and seals are separate parts from the driveshaft itself. A boot is a rubber cover around the joint, and a seal closes off the area around the shaft. On this job, we replaced the left and right outer boots and the housing seals.

Why is rear toe adjusted first?

The rear axle's direction is confirmed first so the front wheels can be set to match it. On this car, we adjusted the rear toe and then set the front toe.

If the car still doesn't drive right after suspension repairs

We review the repaired area and the alignment readings together, then explain what to check next. Please tell us which parts were repaired and when the car feels uncomfortable to drive. You can send a previous alignment report when booking.

We explain the work and estimate before proceeding with your consent.
