BMW 525d GT filled with gasoline: rear seat removed to service the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter
This 2017 525d GT, a diesel, was mistakenly filled with gasoline. We removed the rear seat and interior trim to reach the fuel tank. We flushed out the mixed fuel, replaced the fuel filter and refilled with diesel. During the same visit we also changed the engine oil, the air filter and the cabin air filter.
If you've put gasoline in a diesel car, your first question is probably how much work it will need. We start by draining and servicing the places where the wrong fuel sits: the tank, the fuel module and the fuel filter. Whether the high-pressure pump and injectors need attention depends on the condition of the car.
This 2017 BMW 525d GT arrived after gasoline had been mistakenly added during refuelling. We removed the rear seat and interior trim to reach the fuel tank. We lifted out the fuel module to check inside the tank, then replaced the fuel filter and filled the car with diesel. The work was completed without major issues. The high-pressure pump and injectors were not replaced; we left them as items to monitor as the car is driven.

We removed the rear seat and interior trim to reach the tank
Wrong-fuel service means draining the incorrect fuel and cleaning out everywhere it has sat. On this GT, the rear seat and surrounding trim have to come out before you can reach the top of the tank, where the fuel module is located. So we dismantled the interior before handling any fuel. This part took more work than on other models.
Once the top of the tank was exposed, we disconnected the lines attached to the fuel module. If these fuel line connections are misaligned on reassembly, fuel can leak, so they must go back exactly as they were. The route to the tank differs by model, so the extent of disassembly and labour time vary even for the same wrong-fuel problem.

We removed the fuel module to service the tank and replaced the fuel filter
We lifted the fuel module out of the tank and checked inside. The fuel module is the part that sends fuel from the tank toward the engine. If fuel mixed with gasoline remains in the tank or around the module, it can pass back into the fuel system.
Underneath the car, we replaced the fuel filter with a new one. Fuel that has come through from the tank also sits inside the filter, so emptying the tank while leaving the filter in place would leave mixed fuel behind. After flushing the mixed fuel and replacing the filter, we filled the car with diesel.
Gasoline has lower lubricity than diesel, which can put strain on the high-pressure pump and injectors that deliver fuel at high pressure. This time neither part was replaced; both were left as items to monitor as the car is driven.

In the same visit we changed the engine oil, air filter and cabin air filter
We drained and replaced the engine oil, used an engine treatment (BG DOC), and checked the condition of the oil filter. We replaced the air filter, which cleans the air the engine draws in, and the air-conditioning (cabin) filter, which cleans the air coming into the cabin.
For the fuel system we used three products: BG FUEL DRIER 280, Diesel fuel conditioner DFC PLUS and BG245. Additives do not replace the work of draining the wrong fuel. On this car, we drained the fuel and replaced the filter first, then used these products as fuel-system care.

Frequently asked questions
After a wrong-fuel fill, are the high-pressure pump and injectors replaced right away?
First we drain the wrong fuel and service the tank and fuel filter. On this 525d GT, neither part was replaced; both were left as items to monitor as the car is driven. The scope needed varies from car to car, depending on whether the engine was started and the car driven after refuelling.
Will an additive alone fix it?
No. Additives do not replace the work of draining the mixed fuel. On this car too, we flushed the mixed fuel, replaced the fuel filter and filled it with diesel before using care products.
Why does the 525d GT take more work for wrong-fuel service?
Because the rear seat and surrounding trim have to be removed first to reach the top of the tank, where the fuel module is located.
